Right on target

It’s an exciting week here at WMG! Our offices are filled with workshop attendees learning more about the book biz, and our newest novel of the year officially releases tomorrow.

The SF thriller Snipers, by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, is a fantastic new addition to the WMG family. Part time travel, part alternate history and all thriller, it’s a must-read.

Here’s the premise:

The Carnival Sniper—as famous as Jack The Ripper. And like Jack The Ripper, never caught, his identity lost to history.

In 1913, the Carnival Sniper terrorized Vienna, murdering the famous and not-so-famous alike. Police Detective Johann Runge never caught the Sniper and his failure defined the rest of his life.

In 2005, bestselling crime writer Sofie Branstadter receives permission to use modern forensic investigative techniques on the Sniper’s victims. She believes she can figure out the identity of the Sniper, but she needs the help of Runge’s great-grandson, classical pianist Anton Runge.

Together the two of them plunge into a world of scientific evidence and fantastic clues, all leading to one unbelievable conclusion.

And it is. It really is.

Snipers ebook coverThe cover looks pretty darned good, too, if I do say so myself <grin>. I love it when a project comes together.

So, check it out. You can buy the ebook on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple, Sony, or Smashwords. The print version is available, too, from your favorite bookseller, and our partner Audible has the audiobook release.

Reviews have already started pouring in.

RT Book Reviews says: “Chilling murders, mind-blowing suspense, a touch of time travel and a bit of romance combine to a thought-provoking, entertaining vacation from reality.”

Dave Dickinson of Astroguyz calls it “a fast paced whodunit,” and says: “Snipers is an excellent amalgamation of history, thriller, mystery & science fiction.”

Bill Crider calls Snipers “a fast-moving thriller” and says, “the ending implies that a sequel is in the works. I’ll be reading it.”

We hope you’ll be reading it, too.

Saving the world, one issue at a time

It’s a funny thing, publishing a magazine in book form. You get all the deadlines of a magazine and a book rolled into one. You get to deal with everything in multiples: editors (at least two), writers (a handful or more—and yes, that pun was intended), copy editors, narrators (because we do an audio version, too), and more. And you have a hard and fast publication schedule, which means hard and fast deadlines. But as it’s a book, it never goes out of print.

But when you start a project like that, you’ve got a heck of a ramp-up period. For example, just this past week, I was working on five different volumes all at the same time. Confusing? Um, yes. Exhilarating? Of course.

But it makes one get a little silly. WMG editor and author Kristine Kathryn Rusch talks about getting lost in a book she’s writing and not knowing what month or year or even decade it is sometimes. (She just finished the next Smokey Dalton novel, Street Justice—which comes out in March 2014—and has finally returned to us from 1970.) I understand that kind of disorientation. Working on issues with publication dates ranging from this week to next spring at the same time causes a bit of vertigo. You’re never quite sure what month you’re thinking in.

FR How to Save the World ebook cover webBut this week, I’m rooting myself firmly in the now. And the now is How to Save the World, the second volume of our Fiction River Original Anthology Magazine series. It is already live in ebook and trade paperback and in the hands of most, if not all, of our subscribers. The audiobook version is on its way to sale, as well (Little happy dance.) You can even listen to a sneak preview of the audiobook, Dean Wesley Smith’s I’m-not-ashamed-to-admit-it-made-me-cry story Neighborhoods during our premiere of Podcast Thursdays this week, hosted by yours truly.

For the Fun of It

Back in the day, I managed a children’s newspaper insert for a metro daily newspaper. Part of Newspapers In Education, a program that integrates the use of newspaper products into teachers’ lesson plans, the insert was published weekly around a theme. I got to choose the theme, which was part of the fun, and I used topics from pets to the periodic table of elements (yes, I was a science geek). We would use the theme to build article topics, crossword puzzles, word finds, and the like. It was some of the most fun I’ve had in my career.

And on the back of each issue was a piece of fiction. The story—which seems prophetic now as it was set in the Pacific Northwest, a place I didn’t know then I’d eventually make my home—chronicled the adventures of a young boy who witnessed D. B. Cooper’s fateful parachute jump to freedom after hijacking a plane. It was released chapter by chapter over the course of thirteen or so weeks.

I found myself eagerly anticipating the next chapter of that story as it would come over the wire each week. I could probably have tracked down the tale in its entirety and read it all at once—I am a journalist, after all, and seeking information is kind of what we do. But there was something about the wait, the anticipation. It was a fun way to read.

And now I can bring that fun to some of our books here at WMG. Starting April 23, we’ll launch Novel Tuesday, where we’ll be publishing a novel right on our website (released one chapter at a time). We’ll do this from time to time, when the book is right.

The first book we’ll offer is Spree, a new hard-boiled mystery novel by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Here’s the synopsis:

Spree ebook cover webTwo days ago, Moira escaped the Midwest with Kasey and her Barbie doll in the back seat of a beat-up van. Now, on sun-drenched Highway 95 in nowheresville Nevada, she wonders if she escaped at all. The residents of Hawthorne, one of the few towns in the desert and her ultimate destination, use bombshells as lawn decorations. She thinks Hawthorne marks the end of her trip; instead, it marks the beginning of one strange and scary adventure, one she and Kasey need to survive.

The book is already available in ebook form and will be available in print shortly. Or you can read it chapter-by-chapter, week-by-week, right here at WMG.

Novel Tuesday is just one more way for us to show you how much we value your readership. Let the fun of anticipation begin.
