Traveling back in time

When you publish in the sf genre, you’re bound to come across a time travel book or two. We’ve published several this year, in fact—Snipers, written by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, and Fiction River: Time Streams, edited by Dean Wesley Smith, to name just a couple. So, it’s not unusual for me to feel a bit out of time now and then.

But for the next three weeks, I’m taking you with me on a trip back through time, dear reader—2013, to be specific. My final three blogs of the year will be a Year in Review, in four-month segments.

We’ll start this week with January through April, continue next week with May through August, and we’ll wrap it up on Dec. 30 with September through December.

We’ve had a great year here at WMG, and I want to take a moment to thank all of you for helping make that happen.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: We couldn’t do it without you.

Bringing Back the Shiver

The vampires in a lot of paranormal novels these days aren’t all that dangerous or even particularly threatening. With sparkly skin, impressive pecs and studly thighs, these vampires often seem more like Care Bears with fangs.

But if this Halloween season finds you yearning for a return to the vampire-as-true-predator character, look no further than Sins of the Blood.

Author Kristine Kathryn Rusch brings back the shiver and the creeping dread caused by a true creature of the night. Rusch’s vampires aren’t sensitive artists or hot guys with a thing for O-positive. The beasts in Sins of the Blood destroy life and innocence.

And as every true monster needs a hunter, meet Cammie:

Keep the shivers coming this Halloween season with these titles from WMG Publishing:

Summer Road Trip

Once upon a time, a woman told stories night after night to save her life. Her name, we are told in One Thousand and One Nights, was Scheherazade. In addition to surviving a murderous prince, she invented the serialized story.

A few thousand years later, the serialized story is going strong here at WMG with Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s novel, Spree. We hope you’ve been reading along, chapter by chapter, every week. In case you’ve been on the fence, we offer a peek into the world of this exciting novel.

Publisher’s Note: The Whole Kitten Caboodle

As longtime readers of this blog know, I lost my three beloved cats within nine months of each other the past two years. They were all elderly, but it was still heartbreaking and brutal. I was NOT ready to love a cat again. Not yet.

But, as many cat-lovers know, you don’t choose the cat(s). They choose you. Or, in my case, they choose my husband.

In the middle of my year of goodbyes, a feral kitten (maybe three or four months old) showed up under our porch. We had no idea whether she was male or female until she became pregnant shortly after finding us. I had no capacity for kittens at that time, so even the one time we could have intervened, I couldn’t do it. I was broken.

But lo and behold, the kittens found us anyway. And my husband spent the summer socializing them. Our house literally had an open-door policy when it came to cats.

And now, the two kittens we were able to socialize are our new beloved cats.

I wasn’t ready. But they needed us. And I must admit…every home needs a cat. At least, every home I want to live in.

Cats just make everything better.

That goes for fiction, too. Just ask Kristine Kathryn Rusch. She’s the curator for the latest Cattitude StoryBundle. Here’s what she has to say about the subject:

Cozy mysteries, serious witches, not-so-serious witches, musicians, dead musicians, pirates, pirates in space, space opera, fantasy, and romance. What do these things have in common? Cats, of course. Delightful cats. Dozens of cats. More cats than most clowders usually have.

This Storybundle has all of these cats and these stories, plus maybe a dozen more. From short stories to novels, novellas to anthologies, you’ll find it all in this bundle, so long as the fiction contains a cat. For $20, you’ll get all the books, including three exclusive to this bundle, and a chance to donate to an important charity.

You can read more about the bundle here.

You know who else likes to feature cats in his fiction? That’s right: Dean Wesley Smith. A group of kittens even play a prominent role in one of his Cold Poker Gang mysteries: Ring Game.

And there’s still time to support the Case Card Cold Poker Gang Kickstarter, featuring the newest novel and collection in the series.

We’ve hit three regular stretch goals and a special stretch goal so far, which means all supporters at the $5 level and above also get the following:

Books:

“The Road Back: A Doc Hill Story”

WEIRD CRIME: A Collection of Six Really, Really, Really Whacked Out Crime Stories

A series, a serial killer, and a serious mystery

It’s no mystery that serial killers terrify and fascinate us. Just Google “serial killer” and you’ll find all sorts of lists naming the most famous serial killers of our time.

Even out of our time, serial killers fascinate us. Take Jack the Ripper. Just last year the news was abuzz with the claim that the infamous but unnamed Jack the Ripper had finally been identified. Doubt was later cast upon the DNA identification process, but the attention this discovery garnered proves that time does not diminish the thrall of a mystery.

Cold Call ebook cover webSo, why am I thinking about serial killers this week, you ask? Because a serial killer draws the attention of the Cold Poker Gang in Dean Wesley Smith’s latest novel, Cold Call.

Here’s the synopsis:

When Retired Detective Bayard Lott offers to help Retired Detective Julia Rogers search for her lost friend near a remote Idaho lake, they find clues that might lead them directly to the most dangerous serial killer in Las Vegas history.

Set in the rugged mountains of Idaho, this twisted mystery that pits the Cold Poker Gang against a master criminal.

Kill Game ebook cover webIf you’ve missed this series so far, you might want to consider going all in. The Cold Poker Gang mystery series (Kill Game, Cold Call and Calling Dead [coming in May]) crosses over with Dean’s Doc Hill thriller series (Dead Money, The Road Back). The main characters of each series tend to show up in the other—as Doc and Annie do in Cold Call—and although one series is mystery and one is thriller, both are bound to hold you fast.

But don’t take my word for it. Midwest Book Review says of Dead Money: “…Dean Wesley Smith draws a royal straight flush by making the hand he deals readers seem possible with this exhilarating political poker thriller…”

Exhilarating, indeed. And Cold Call features one clever serial killer. Although his identity becomes known early on, that detail only ratchets up the suspense as to whether the gang can catch him—without losing one of their own.

So, whether you’re stuck inside because of one more massive snowstorm or just sick of winter weather, you’ve got something to carry you through until spring. Just make sure you don’t read this lakeside. You’ll see why soon enough.

What Makes a Bad Book? (3 Anti-Reader Crimes Some Authors Will Make)

This Sounds Really Familiar…

You know the feeling when you’re reading along on a book and you just know what’s going to happen. Like, yeah did I already read this?

But you know it’s a new book! Just came out.

You pop online and doublecheck. Even scramble around in the beginning pages to find that copyright page.

Yep. Brand new book.

But I swear I’ve read this before!

What just happened? OK, You either just:

  • Finished the book, got your noggin’ hit, selectively forgot your hours of previous new book interaction and just blissfully picked it up again (about as likely as beautiful toe fungus).
  • Or you have picked up a (bad) book where the author has committed one of these three heinous anti-reader crimes:
    • Gotcha! You’ve Just Been (Poorly) Troped
    • I Shall Trap You In A White Room and You Will Like It!
    • I Want to Be One of the Cool People, too!

I shall go into each of these is delicious depth, plus how to avoid bad books before you plunk down your money!

So come hang out with me on the MOTHERSHIP blog over the next couple weeks as I go into each of them.

In the meantime…

A Great Story Series for those who like the THE TWILIGHT ZONE…

Bryant Street Kickstarter

  • Do you like:
    • THE TWILIGHT ZONE?
    • TWIN PEAKS?
    • Dark and Strange Stories?

Then welcome to Bryant Street!

Where THE TWILIGHT ZONE and TWIN PEAKS meet…

Bryant Street, a standard subdivision street outside of any city. Well-kept lawns, paint and roofs up to HOA standards, two- or three-car garages.

Everything looks to any casual observer perfect and normal.

But inside those perfect-looking homes, the residents seem just a little off. A little twisted or confused or a half-turn out of reality.

Normal exists on other subdivision streets, but never on Bryant Street.

Those are fantastic questions!

For the answer, you will have to wait and see.
